Yiddish used to be a Germanic dialect but in approximately the 9th century, it became a full-fledged language, primarily spoken by Ashkenazic Jews, incorporating elements of Hebrew, Aramaic, Slavic languages, and Romance languages. Though Yiddish is a fusion of many languages including, Hebrew and Aramaic, in Ashkenazi societies, Hebrew was the language of the Bible and prayer, Aramaic was the language of learning while Yiddish was the language of everyday life. Scholars refer to this as the internal trilingualism of Ashkenaz.
Russian-born Sholem Jacob Abramowitz, popularly known by the pseudonym Mendele Mocher Sforim (Mendele the bookseller), is today considered the father of Yiddish literature.
Abraham Goldfaden is considered the father of Yiddish theatre.
Ashkenazi people have spread all over the world thus, their architecture took different forms dependent on the influence of the cultures around them, the financial means of each community, and the local climate. But still, in Eastern Europe, their architecture can be identified by its small verandas and ground-floor spaces for stores.
