Belarusian is the popular language spoken by the people of Belarus, officially the Republic of Belarus which is a landlocked country in eastern Europe. Did you know about 40% of the area is covered by forests? It is sometimes referred to as ‘Lungs of Europe’?

The national dish of Belarus is Draniki. Today's diet of Belarusians includes many traditional dishes. The most popular are pork stew (machanka) and vereshchaka, homemade sausages, draniki (thick potato pancakes), kolduny, kletski (dumplings), babka (baked grated potato pie), cold sorrel soup, mushroom soup.

Pancake Week or Maslenitsa Week, this Eastern Slavic holiday is celebrated in the last week before Lent. Pancakes are rustled up in every home to be enjoyed with friends and family, as well as being served up at local street festivals. Belarusians don’t shy away from creative toppings either, from ground poppy seeds sweetened with sugar to hearty mushroom stew – the possibilities know no bounds.
