      Halito is a common greeting in southeastern Mississippi. We present to you some interesting information about southeastern Mississippi.

      Choctaw, originally North American Indian tribe of Muskogean linguistic stock, who traditionally lived in what is now southeastern Mississippi. Their descendants live in Oklahoma today.
      Following are some of the interesting facts about Choctaw people and their culture:

      1. Shukha Nipi ‘Pork roast’ and Nipi Shila meaning ‘salted pork’ are some of the many popular delicacies of the Choctaw people.

      1. The Choctaw were farming people. Choctaw women did most of the farming, harvesting crops of corn, beans, squash, and sunflowers. Choctaw men did most of the hunting, shooting deer, wild turkeys, and small game. Men also caught fish in the rivers, lakes, and sea coasts.

      2. Green Corn Festival is one of the most important events celebrated in this region.

      1. Did you know that they call themselves Chahta in the Choctaw language, which was the name of a legendary Choctaw leader, and also means "the people"?

      2. Choctaw recipes included cornbread, soups, and stews cooked on stone hearths. The Choctaws also enjoyed sassafrass tea.

      3. Did you know that there are lots of traditional Choctaw legends and fairy tales. Storytelling is very important to the Choctaw culture.

      1. The Choctaws are responsible for giving America its oldest field sport, Stickball. Stickball was often used between tribes as an alternative to war when settling disputes.
