Ancient Bangkok, founded in 1782 by King Rama I, served as the capital of the Kingdom of Siam (now Thailand). Situated along the Chao Phraya River, it was a center of commerce and culture. The city was known for its grand palaces, intricate temples, and extensive canal systems, earning it the nickname "Venice of the East." The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, which houses the Emerald Buddha, are iconic landmarks from this era. Today, Bangkok's old city, or Rattanakosin Island, preserves its rich cultural heritage.
