    • RE: WAKANDA is not in a standard U.S. English dictionary

      First of all I agree with Tiger-- the word list is made by some committee somewhere that has NO affiliation with Lex.

      Secondly before complaining you guys might want to look in more dictionaries!

      https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/wakanda

      Noun: a supernatural force similar to mana believed by the Sioux to pervade animate and inanimate objects in varying degrees sometimes giving them extraordinary powers and usually assumed to be the cause of extraordinary happenings

      @jrp32 Interesting! Wikipedia says "it is dialect to the eye, rather than to the ear."

      Is it bad form to reply to myself? LOL

      I was thinking about this, and it turns out that the reason my relative couldn't see my game posted was because of my formula. I didn't realize it works that way now.

      @betterlate1-0 said in Black Cross?:

      @roymccoy I am annoying and you just proved why. You do not like the truth or facts. You find it fine that are rude and crude and apparently bully others to get your way. I point it out you censor me. Have a good day

      Better, I don't really know Roy, but he doesn't seem like a bully to me.

      And you'll probably take this the wrong way, but you would be doing yourself a favor if you thought about and edited your sentences before posting. Like "You find it fine that are rude and crude" -- what was that supposed to mean?

      As for the plus sign in the middle of the board, do you people sit and stare at it? Star or plus sign? No big deal to me!

    • Why does session timeout so quickly?

      This is a minor thing, but I don't understand why a logged-in session times out so quickly? Just now I was playing on the main website, and clicked to open 'my stats' in a new window, and had to log-in again, even though I was still active in the main lex window!

      @anexparrot 'evite' is a go, but not 'evote'. UK dictionary. On checking tho, I see the former does not mean an invitation rec'd by email. 🙂

      Yes, I've seen evite. Eviting is good in both UK and US as is evited!

    • Time formula and censoring

      Two unrelated requests that probably have already been asked for:

      1. Please, can we have a formula in settings for minimum/maximum times we want to play? (Recently I forgot to look at an incoming match, and it turned out it was for a fast game, which I didn't want to play.)

      2. It seems like censoring only has an effect on lobby/chatting. I'm sure a lot of us want it to also block people from joining our games!

      Thank you.

    • RE: Time formula and censoring

      @dan-mitchell

      Perhaps they have fixed censoring.

      I agree with you that a very different visual look for the dialog boxes for 'match' vs. 'join' would be very nice.

      Don't you wonder if some people match randomly with fast games in hopes of an easy win?

      @anexparrot This one's kinda silly and not particularly interesting. Just a funny inconsistency I guess.

      The other day I was checking if this was valid. Somewhat surprisingly, it's not:

      For a laugh, I then went on to check this one. Sure enough, it's valid:

      I LOL'ed-- don't think i've ever seen butthead played!

    • Unusual / interesting words found from lex

      I was just examining my last game and the bot said we missed:

      "earthpea" - I've never heard this, but apparently it's an 'American hogpeanut'

      "veejay" - I didn't realize this was valid. Isn't it kinda funny that veejays were probably only common from the 1980s until the late 90s?

      Anybody else have interesting lex words to share?

    • RE: Validity?

      @dan I think the obvious answer is that it's fairly easy for the site to get a wordlist for the games but expensive to get a real, good dictionary with definitions. I googled one of lex's weird definitions once and it matched some mediocre (presumably free) dictionary, I forget the name.

      @jrp32 said in Validity?:

      Since there is no category that I see for commentary I guess this category will do as well as any. I suppose that many of the people who play word games are logophiles like myself. So, this is for those of you using V2 and getting the definitions of accepted words as a trailer to your screen of the game you are on. When, instead of a definition you just get a notice of "- This word is acceptable for play in the US & UK dictionaries." or similar wording do you have a specific thought on that, before you look for the word in an aggregate of dictionaries? What is your thought?

      I'm not sure I understand what you are looking for?

      The words that often really amuse me are the ones the analysis tool says I or my opp missed! For instance, the other day it said we missed "zaptieh!" I'm pretty sure I've never seen that word before. (It's a Turkish policeman.)

    • Poor analysis

      I was using the tool to analyze my last game, and the silly thing could really use some tuning:

      lex bad analysis 2022.jpg

      I bingoed with 'conners' for 90, but the tool said the best play was 'nacreous' for 72...

      It also sometimes misses easy bingos!

      It would be nice if as you step through a game the score displayed reflects that point in the game.

      Thank you.

    • RE: What dictionary is being used?

      @fiona-smith The dictionaries on here are full of obscure words and a few errors. You might have a look in the Collins dictionary. For instance, about "jedi," it says:

      "jedi in British English
      NOUN
      a person who claims to live according to a philosophy based on that of the fictional Jedi, a caste of wizards in the Star Wars series of films by George Lucas, US film director"
      https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/jedi

      (I'm amused that it says jedi was popular in the 1700s!)
