You can get a 96 hour transit visa for the UAE quite easily; however, the regulations and requirements are specific enough to require that you plan well beforehand to avoid being stuck at the airport. Visas for transit for 96 hours are not extendable or renewable. The UAE requires a transit visa every time you stopover there. It is not possible to convert a transit visa for the UAE to a residence or work permit.
