When a man is sexually aroused or stimulated, nitric oxide is released in the penile tissues. Nitric oxide stimulates the production of cGMP, which relaxes the smooth muscle cells in the blood vessel walls in the penis. This relaxation leads to the dilation (widening) of blood vessels and an increased blood flow to the erectile tissues of the penis.
