Yes, and honky, wop, spic, nigger and wetback, please. Plus I'm sure there are lots of others. I'm all for correctness, and I'm sure there are many words that have to go. Thank you Lexulous for policing the language!

I'm confused by the continuation of this thread and seek a definitive clarification. Is it not true that Lexulous uses two Scrabble dictionaries, over the content of which Lexulous has no influence? This may already have been established and I think it has, but in that case the continuing discussion of which words are to be included or not doesn't make any practical sense. Thank you.

However it is not clear to players if any weight is given to the possible replies made by their opponent for each possible word that (s)he might play.

I'm sure it isn't. Changing the name to "Score strength" as has been proposed would take care of this.

@sakamvari didn't reply to your question, and I don't see any reason whatever for you to send a screenshot. You could simply post a word that doesn't have a definition, and one could understand that no definition appears for it.

The reason for the lacking definitions, I imagine, is that the word list is coming from one place and the dictionary from another. Some of the accepted words simply don't have dictionary entries, at least yet.

The dictionaries are the dictionaries. I eschew linguistic or sociological discussions here, and I play to get the higher score and win rather than to be morally praiseworthy or politically correct.

    • RE: Wee problem with Dictionary vs. Play Strength indicator in Play box at lower right

I don't think this is a problem, but rather simply a difference between the functioning of the score thermometer when it's your turn and when it isn't. When it's your turn and you enter a valid word, the meter turns green and you can play the word. When it isn't your turn, it will display the point yield and percentage of possible high schore whichever tiles are properly laid, but it won't turn to green as when it's your turn. I see this as appropriate, since you can't play the word when it's not your turn and so it shouldn't turn green suggesting you can. Thus no problem in my book.

What bothers me, @lexulous and @sakamvari, is the Define button's staying black and ugly until a playable word is entered in the Dictionary text field. The change to blue there is superfluous and unnecessary as the text changing from "is not valid" in red to "is valid" in green provides this information immediately and clearly. The change in state when a valid word is entered should not be a change in the color of the button, which is no help, but rather a change in its state to make Define activate so that it shows the definition or definitions when the return key is pressed.

    • RE: Black Cross?

I don't care what it's called, it's crude and ugly when compared to the previous gold star. The most significant thing about this in my book is that the developers either aren't in this forum at all, or they're too lazy or don't have the guts to deal directly with the players and their desires and problems. Or the developers are just not interested, or they expect to be paid for every moment of their engagement and that's not in their contract. The annoyingly boilerplate non-responses of sakamvari are not adequate or satisfying. WHO PUT THE UGLY CROSS OR PLUS SIGN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BOARD, AND WHY? Let's hear from this person, why don't we.

    • RE: 'Move Strength' - details please

Rather than add a message somewhere saying that "Move strength" doesn't necessarily indicate the strength of the move – which seems a bit silly – why not simply change the problematical "Move strength" label? It doesn't have to be "Score strength", though that would be an improvement over the repeatedly criticized original phrase.

How about "% of possible max"? Can we maybe get a consensus on that, or on something else? There is clearly no consensus on "Move strength", which has come under criticism yet again and will never be acceptably correct as is.

@roymccoy You have to remember that developers are paid to do things. They cannot, by definition of their jobs, leave well enough alone. If everything were fine in their view they would go home and they'd be out of a job so they always have to continually tweak and "improve" things. It's frigging annoying sometimes and this is an example of it. In no other industry of which I'm aware, does this happen. The motto, "If it ain't broke don't fix it," is anathema to them.

There's truth in what you say, despite a bit of exaggeration. I'm not sure, however, that the Lexulous developers are doing anything, except a very few rare and nonsensical things such as replacing the star (itself unattractive compared to the earlier one) with a plus sign. The arrows still aren't fixed, etc.

I'm no linguist, but I would bet English has borrowed many words from other languages and left the accent marks behind.
      Déjà vu?

You don't need to be a linguist to know that. It doesn't justify wholesale abandonment in every case, however. Many accents are properly retained, and these should include the tilde in Spanish ñ. See e.g. http://www.hrwiki.org/wiki/Senor. I'm suppose MW is being "descriptive" in response to people's being too lazy or illiterate to type the ñ on their phones.

@roymccoy Must have been the word nortenas (one 'n' not two), which would be the plural form of nortena (definition: an inhabitant or native of northern Mexico). It's legit.

You agree as to this likelihood, then. I don't approve of this inclusion, as ñ is a different letter in Spanish and I don't think Lexulous should allow e.g. senor or manana either. But it does, and if a word's accepted that's what counts in the game.

My opponent played the word NORTENNAS, which the Lexulous dictionary says is invalid. He got 79 points and I’m not happy. How can this be corrected?

Are you sure he didn't play NORTENAS, which is accepted? I suspect this is what may have happened. If not, a screenshot would be helpful in determining that the error actually did occur and in what context.

Agreed. It's bad. I don't know if it's poor taste, or negligence, or incompetence, or what. I also don't know if the developer or developers have seen your comment. They've shown little or no sign of paying attention even if they do happen to read the forum posts, and I've seen no evidence of that.
