If you beat someone with a rating that's significantly lower than yours, does your rating decrease? Must you always play higher rated people to climb up?

Also, why have so many people got a best score of 2000+ ? I've played a two thousand games and without meaning to blow my own trumpet, I'm pretty good. Not sure why I've never got more. My highest is 1850.

    Cheers for any replies

@l-j On the website version, it tells you before playing what the rating change will be for a win, loss or draw, so you can assess whether it's worth it. The worst you can get is +0 if you beat someone with a much lower rating. Your rating will only decrease following a loss or if you draw against someone with a lower rating.
