Just had another game where I bingoed first turn and opponent left. Easy to do when they pay no price. Reminds me of all the other games opponents quit for that same reason. How about a deterrent like a large rate deduction ? People leave because they can. If penalty of maybe 100 or 200 points, maybe they would think twice?

@sakamvari You know it is only a certain group that respond here, others complain about it but won't say it here, they do not want to be targeted. And, of course the ones that are guilty of quitting because they can, would not speak up to say its a good idea or possibly say it is bad idea but that not probable either. So, here I am and hope you will discuss it.. Hope not a stock answer and it will be considered. Thanks.

With respect, this is a very bad idea indeed.

If people leave a game the obvious result is that they lose on time. If this mechanism is not already in place then it should be. If I may suggest an alternative, it would be to give them a temporary ban.

In either case the offender will lose the game and their rating will go down whilst the other player gets the points.

This happens to me all the time on chess websites i.e. they are losing badly and decide to disconnect. When this happens to me I just read some news articles on another browser so that I can see if they return.

            Fun fact:
Such people often wait until they have a few seconds left and then make a move. They hope that their opponent has left in disgust so that they are the ones who win on time!

@mistertoad Hi Mr Toad, I am talking about the game where first turn, I bingo, they leave. Am thinking maybe give them 30 seconds to take turn or leave no penalty or if op bingos first turn and they leave then a penalty. Hope that clarifies

You bingo, they leave, you get your points for the win, they lose points because they lost. I don't see what the problem is.

@mistertoad if I am first turn and I bingo, game ends . No pts no winner . I come here to play lex not to start a game and leave it. If there is a penalty, people would consider staying and finishing. Don't you play when you are here? Never seen or experienced this?

As I am pretty much a 'newbie' here, I did not know that. I think that this should be changed right away!

So, although I disagree with your suggestion of a penalty, I do not agree with Lexulous that an opponent withdrawing should escape scot free!

I do sympathise with what you say but I thought that an opponent who withdraws for no reason would lose rating points even if both players hadn't moved.

I confess that there are two instances when I would really like to withdraw a game. One is when I am losing so badly that there seems no point in continuing when I don't have enough letter to catch up! The second instance is when this situation is reversed and the opponent has no chance of catching up.

In chess, there is the option of resigning ... why not with Scrabble games too??!!

OK, but the feelings we have about people quitting a game ("because they can") are exactly the same.

Some of the logic is similar too. For example, it's not about simply finding the best move, one has to take into account the consequences. In chess your 'brilliant' move may well be a prelude to a nasty trap that your opponent has thought about well in advance. Similarly, in Scrabble, by making a tempting high-scoring move you may be giving your opponent an opportunity to use a triple score.

But I promise to try not to overdo the analogies with chess, OK?!

Thanks sakamvari. Referencing betterlate's comment, I would ask if players still lose points when they leave without being polite enough to resign in a sporting manner.
