Getting rid of cheats
-
@terrijay (and actually @betterlate1-0 and @Mistertoad and @ everyone) it would astonish me if Lexulous was able to institute any kind of reliable anti-cheating measures. Especially given their relatively limited resources. One factor is the wide variety of types of games and players (e-mail; snail's-pace live games; rapidfire timed games, etc.). Another is the fact that one player's "obvious cheat" is another's "how can you be so sure?". I have had people accuse me of certainty with playing at a rate that could not possibly be unaided. All I was doing was thinking up my move during the other player's turn, and typing my letters quickly when my turn came. Other players clobber me consistently because they take the game a lot more seriously and know huge numbers of obscure words (some people actually do play competitive scrabble in real-world tournaments). Good luck on getting any real curbs on cheating put in place!
@thatguythere202 Hey, did you hear about the 5 women ski jumpers disqualified at the Olympics over their jumpsuits? They were accused of cheating. Apparently, by allowing the suits to stretch between thighs, it creates larger mass, thereby, the lift is greater.

@terrijay
I am sure you are right in saying that some people cheat. I would say that they actually quite insecure and, when they cheat and win, it boosts their low self esteem. And they convince themselves that it's all OK to do this - it's only a game etc etc. But, you know, I myself, juggle the letters about a bit - as well as checking the 'Move Strength'. If I don't get a certain percentage (depending on the game situation) I invariably return to the game on the following day to see if I can improve my move. In other words I see the game as a sort of jigsaw, a sort of interlocking set of pieces that I need to optimise.
So I often get an obscure word by chance. And I do not wish to be called a cheat for doing this. If the powers that be don't like my approach then, by all means remove the 'Move Strength' option and I won't complain.
@mistertoad We would never all you "cheater", Mistertoad, you Sexy Beast!

@amy-hall You're kidding me, right? What, no free chocolates and no car keys? Damn I am wasting my time here.
@thatguythere202 I remember little boys doing this in grade school, so that their buddies and the whole class could get a laugh at my expense. It hurt then, and it hurts, now.
-
@betterlate1-0 Agreed. Cheaters don't learn anything. Sad. No love for words.
@amy-hall of course they learn, they learn to cheat

@betterlate1-0 My concern is how cheating affects the person's "character", or personality, or ethics, or whatever you want to call it.
I once cheated in grade school by looking at my partner's paper during a test. He wrote so big, I rationalized my cheating by "well, if he didn't write so big, I wouldn't have cheated". Obviously I was very young and stupid. But I couldn't handle the guilt. The guilt! So I went to my teacher and told her, so ashamed and crying through it. She changed my grade, and I had to apologize to my partner. It was an important lesson I'll never forget.
Remember when you were little and you saw adults cheat? It made me so sad.

@amy-hall Everyone tries it at one point or another but it is a choice to continue it. Those who want easy will take easy for everything. Means character is formed You were not being stupid you were inexperienced and exploring.

doing what, amy? I didn't mean to be mocking you, if that's how it came across.

@betterlate1-0 I wanted to try out being a "bad girl". haha. But I couldn't handle the guilt. All I imagined was seeing my Uncle's blue eyes glaring at me, and the horrible feeling of disappointing him. That's why I never cheated... ever. With anything. I don't care if others do it. I just can't handle the guilt. lolol

@mistertoad No, not brave or strong. I just couldn't handle my Uncle Jack being disappointed with me. That would kill me. I'm really old and have never cheated ever about anything because I was traumatized at an early age. lololol All my Uncle Jack had to do to keep ten year old amy in line was stare at me across the room with his steel blue eyes. i loved him so much. edit: when my opps cheat, i don't get mad because it's just a virtual game.
So, when Terijay talks about getting rid of cheaters on Lexulous, which is impossible, I don't understand Teriaajay asking Admin to "do something" about cheaters on Lexulous. boggles the mind.
