I'm a jew. And a Jew, and am Jewish.
I have no problem being a jew.
And have no problem being called a jew, as you can see, I call myself a jew.
I don't find it derogatory in any way whatsoever, and think this entire conversation is ridiculous, sorry.
The world is out of control with "political correctness" lately. Every time I turn around, it's something new that has now been deemed "offensive" for whatever reason. It's like people sit around & think of new ways to get offended, because being offended by something is the new "in" thing.
ANYTHING can be used in a derogatory manner.
But by your logic, "Jew" is okay, "jew" is not.
So how do you convey that in a verbal conversation?
You referred to yourself as a "Jew". So if you're having a verbal conversation with someone, you would verbally say "I am a capital J Jew" - just so they were clear you weren't saying you were a "lowercase j jew"?
So you'd have no problem with someone calling you a Jew, as long as they said "hey you capital letter J Jew". Just to be CLEAR.
Sorry - but lmjaoI could say I find it offensive that you get to speak for people you don't even know, "I will keep this simple. As a Jew the word is offensive to myself and other Jews. Clear?"
How do you know what is offensive to other Jews, jews, or Jewish people?
Do you know them all?
Have you polled the ones that you do know, and asked them if this specifically offends them?
So I am to assume that if someone plays the word jew, it would offend you? What would be the reason that would offend you?
Because you feel that they are not just using the letters in a word GAME, but using this medium an excuse to call you a swindler?So if someone plays the word "bitch", should I immediately be offended & assume that they are calling me a bitch? Even though the only actual definition in the dictionary is that of a female dog? The other definitions are "slang", but derogatory.
So as a woman, should I demand bitch be removed from the game?
Well heck, while we're at it - how about if someone plays the word "colored" which literally means something that has color, but can also have derogatory meanings. Should we have them remove that word as well, because it might be offensive to black people?
We could go on with this forever, until there are what, 100 words left? (until someone steps up & says one offends them, then 99)But what if - and just a what if - a person playing the GAME has those letters in their tray, and plays them just to PLAY them & gain points (which is ultimately the objective I believe). I don't think they chose those letters to deliberately insult the other player.
If you had 3 letters left in your tray, "j" "e" "w", and you could place them just right, with triple letters, a triple word, making 3 more words & would get like 125 points for "jew", or you could just play "ew" for 6, you can say with 100% honesty, that you'd play the 6, just not to use a lowercase word "jew" in a word GAME?
OMG - seriously, think about it. This is a GAME.

It seems that more than 200 dictionary words have been removed from the Scrabble lexicon in the past year or so by Scrabble's board game owners, Mattel. A spokesman said:
"I’ve heard the argument that these are just words, but we believe they have meaning."
Er, yes. Quite so!

The dictionaries are the dictionaries. I eschew linguistic or sociological discussions here, and I play to get the higher score and win rather than to be morally praiseworthy or politically correct.@roymccoy gees how many names do you have?

The word "Medias" was allowed, and defined as the plural form of "media" . "Media" ITSELF is the plural form of "medium", is it not????? I believe you should remove "medias" from the list of acceptable words.

@roymccoy reminds me of someone tells a joke and no one laughs. I find jew very offensive a long with other words, but sometimes I use it. There is no law that says I have to play any that uses offensive words. Do not think for me and do not expect anyone to rewrite the dictionary for anyone else just all should be selective in who they play. There are people i will not play because they think certain 4 letter words are just fine. To me
using some of these words show ignorance, lack of respect and a lack of vocab why play them? As for

Totally agree, It used to be in OSPD. I am looking now in 3 or 4 dictionaries and see the definition that is derogatory but no longer used in OSPD. I think removing it would be great however, then you get into censorship and removal of a variety of words that I would not use in a game..so I don't normally use jew either. Have to get used to the idea some will use it and like other words, there is no need to use them

Being Jewish I have never seen or heard anyone use the word goy as to mean anything other than a Gentile. But, okay still choices to use or not. Jew is Jewish, jew is stereotype that all Jews are cheap. -
I could be wrong, but it's not Lexulous who besides the words right? These are determined by certain player associations so it will depend on what list we pick right? Or does Lexulous have its own set of dictionaries?

This question doesn't appear to have been answered, and I still have it. Is Lexulous modifying standard word lists or not? If it isn't, what's the point of this forum section? Thanks.

@zoso-thezephead That's true. When the word is lowercased, it can have a derogatory meaning: to "jew" someone is to be extremely selfish in a financial transaction, tapping into the racist trope that Jews are, as a race, venal and primarily concerned with making money, perhaps taking advantage.
I note that "fag" is not allowed here, even though it can mean "cigarette." So, I see inconsistency in allowing one pejorative term (lowercase "jew") but not another (fag > homosexual).

It is a simple noun - a person who is Jewish is a Jew. I don't think it is inherently derogatory although used that way by some.

This is the new hobby of Americans as they/you don't have anything other than first world problems to groan about.
It is ultimately people like you, with your attitude, that makes things worse.
Nobody that I have seen in this website is interested in discrimination at all.
But as I have mentioned before, you are a troll, and this type of conversation is not welcome here. We play a game, we are not politicians or popes.
If this game is too intense for you, then I really don't know what a softer option is.

@carolyn-leverich-atkinson, I believe that the UK version of Lexulous now uses Collins Dictionary as the arbiter of acceptable words. And, unless they have changed in the last few months, it is known as CSW19 -- Collins Scrabble Words, 19th edition (or something).
Lexulous used to use SOWPODS. An improperly formed acronym of OWL and OSPD developed by the Scrabble (TM) people to be used for UK play of Scrabble. I thought it imperfect, but it is the gold standard compared to the CSW. (I will explain what those acronyms are for anyone who does not know them, or they can be looked up.)
Here is a recent example of how ridiculous it has become ZE is a valid "word" in CSW19 and hence, Lexulous. Paraphrasing, it is defined by Collins as 'indicative of an accent, usually french. As in "going to ze store" '.
It is things such as this that caused me to go to "forget about trying to learn the valid words for play" and "go for the strategic aspects of the game".
based on the silliness of including "ZE", i do expect that a two letter V word is not far away. Possibly "VA" as a particle of "VA VA VOOM" -
