It's true that OP is referring to the usage as a verb which is rightly deemed an ethnic slur by many. We must think about the integrity of the site though. Lexulous uses the official tournament and club word lists used in competitive Scrabble, not the filtered versions. Therefore, many words considered offensive are permissible. To take the matter further, those with issues or concerns should contact the official bodies who compile those lists. Dictionaries and word lists are meant to be comprehensive. That's the point. They contain the good, the bad and the ugly.

This is a pejorative verb that is offensive to Jewish people and, intentionally or not, infers Jewish people are swindlers.

I have played this word, albeit with some discomfort considering my family tree. Seeing this Topic in the Forum, I decided to look it up in the dictionary. Although it can be used pejoratively, if you look it up in Merriam-Webster you will see four definitions, none pejorative. So, use it in good health, just nonpejoratively! 😉

@jsm said in Please remove the word 'jew':

It is a simple noun - a person who is Jewish is a Jew. I don't think it is inherently derogatory although used that way by some.
Lots of words that are used derogatorily are in Lex (SOWPODS). I agree it feels weird to play them, but - it's a word game.

Your description makes it a pronoun. Following your logic I should then be able to play Christian, Hindu or Muslim. Note the words all start with a capital letter.

@zoso-thezephead That's true. When the word is lowercased, it can have a derogatory meaning: to "jew" someone is to be extremely selfish in a financial transaction, tapping into the racist trope that Jews are, as a race, venal and primarily concerned with making money, perhaps taking advantage.

I note that "fag" is not allowed here, even though it can mean "cigarette." So, I see inconsistency in allowing one pejorative term (lowercase "jew") but not another (fag > homosexual).

@lexulous Please consider the nice valid word DZO

              (Dzo - Wikipedia)

"A dzo (Tibetan ā―˜ā―›ā―žāž‹ mdzo) (also spelled zo, zho and dzho) is a hybrid between the yak and domestic cattle."

Pix is acceptable (for pictures), but vax is not acceptable for vaccine, not tix for tickets. This is not consistent.

As a 'goy' (perjoritive?!) myself, I found this excellent article from a site described as "Jewish. Fearless. Since 1897", thus:

@lolamoth Actually, "fag" is valid, in the US dictionary at least.

I have spoken to some Jewish people on here about the 'jew' issue, and most of them said if they have the letters they will play 'jew'.

What is more amazing to me is that the N-word is in the US dictionary!

@zoso-thezephead Where to start, and where will it end.
I think more likely that the word in the current climate would be removed because it is offensive to most of the world who has predominantly sided with Palestine.

@roymccoy I think you are missing the spirit of the game.
It has never been about word quality, judgement or semantics.
it is based purely on word lists, we have words in our language/s that are not nice ones, but they are there. Excluding and censoring then MAKES the game about more than words, and that has never been the game I want to play.
I play with no intent or malice or subtext. I play for fun.
                                Words will never hurt me.

@roymccoy reminds me of someone tells a joke and no one laughs. I find jew very offensive a long with other words, but sometimes I use it. There is no law that says I have to play any that uses offensive words. Do not think for me and do not expect anyone to rewrite the dictionary for anyone else just all should be selective in who they play. There are people i will not play because they think certain 4 letter words are just fine. To me
using some of these words show ignorance, lack of respect and a lack of vocab why play them? As for
someone else here, goy is not an insult, just means not Jewish. jew is intended to be an insult

The dictionaries are the dictionaries. I eschew linguistic or sociological discussions here, and I play to get the higher score and win rather than to be morally praiseworthy or politically correct.
