My last opponent sat (stopped playing and made me wait) because I guessed the word 'guttier'.

How about requiring people to at least move tiles around within 4 minutes before forcing a resign?

Or if you want to be more 'nice' you could pop up a box to the opponent asking if they want to end the game or allow more time, in case they are playing a friend who has a good reason for being AFK!

For reference, here's how they resolve the issue on a popular online chess playing website:

"What is done about players leaving games without resigning?
If your opponent frequently aborts/leaves games, they get "play banned", which means they're temporarily banned from playing games. This is not publically indicated on their profile. If this behaviour continues, the length of the playban increases - and prolonged behaviour of this nature may lead to account closure."

@anexparrot Happened to me a few times the past few days. Generally something like this: my opponent knows they can't win the game, it's their turn to play their final letter and end the game, multiple options to play it. At that point they decide to stop playing and let their remaining 5 minutes or so run out before I'm granted the win. And this isn't them suddenly leaving the website or going offline, it's them being deliberately childish.

@dan In situations like that I usually assume that they grew so unenthusiastic that they went AFK, or just switched out to another window and forgot the game. For further comparison: I think Literati used to have a default whereby a player lost any game in which they took more than 3 minutes on a move.

@thatguythere202 Could be that as well. Kinda disrespectful either way though. The people I've had seem to play attentively all game up until the point I mentioned. The 3 minute thing isn't a bad idea, although I think you should be able to use your time as you see fit, as long as it's still mathematically possible that you can win the game. If that's no longer the case, such as above scenario, then it would be be something worth considering.

@dan Lot of childish players here. Did not just start. Looks like they do not stand a chance and poof they are gone.

"not chess Toady" - I prefaced my post with the words "For reference".
"Also not our site, would be up to owners." - Yes, of course.

Well, it seems that the original 'Feature Request' post from 'anexparrot' apparently didn't merit a reply from Lexulous. They appear to have tacitly rejected this "Sitters" thread, yes?

If a player doesn't make a move within, say 3 minutes, then they lose the game. This makes it more difficult for cheaters to google stuff or whatever they do. I play Bullet chess where you have to make ALL your moves in under 3 minutes or you lose.

The penalty for exceeding the time limit results in the loss of the game and, consequently, rating points as well.

If it's an email game then the penalty not finishing a game could be a temporary ban (as often happens on chess sites).
