Wasn't it you who commented that the period of time during which backspace worked had been lengthened from around five to around ten seconds? I thought it was, but maybe it was someone else. In any event, are you telling me now that in Chrome on Windows the arrow is permanent and doesn't disappear after around ten seconds, after which you can't recall tiles with backspace anymore? If so, the transient arrow presumably isn't intentional (in Opera on Mac) and they won't – or shouldn't be – as reluctant to fix it as they've appeared to be till now. -
@terrijay I hope you get it sorted. It does work for most of us. It doesn't work when you drag tiles to the board the old school way, but I consider that normal behavior. Backspace also stops working if you let the direction arrow time out, but escape still works.
Sorry if I'm stating the obvious here, but make sure you first click the board once or twice for a direction arrow, then typing your word. You mentioned that you play fast games, so you probably do this anyway.

@dan-mitchell Backspacing/Esc also seems to work for me ... but I have never been observant enough to notice whether it stops working after elapse of several seconds, so I apologize for having nothing useful to add to the discussion.

Which occurs after only a few seconds. Do people honestly find this acceptable? Do they think it would be prohibitively difficult to correct?

Even the new-version-limited function of the arrow often isn't working for me at present. I'll have an active arrow and still can't type a letter into the tile. As to how the arrow got even more screwed up than it already was, I have no idea.

Forget about Esc, there's no question about that (other than why it isn't documented, and with the voluminous international hellos we can pretty well guess on that). What you can do is delete a tile using the backspace key, and then tell us (1) how long it takes for the arrow to disappear and the backspace key to stop working, and (2) your operating system, device, and browser if you're not using the app. Thanks.

yes, I have run into this too. But it is both rare and inconsistent, so I haven't complained, as I can't say what specifically seems to trigger it.

@roymccoy Probably because it stays up for at least 10 seconds once you've placed it, and that 10 seconds starts from zero again every time you type or delete a letter. That's sufficient for most people to enter and edit a word. You seriously can't make at least one input per 10 seconds to keep it active? You always need over 10 seconds of thinking time between entering one letter and the next? Why are you even activating the arrow if you're not planning on using it as intended within a reasonable amount of time?
I guess it could get mildly annoying if you're the kind of person who likes to try out a million different words in one single spot (in combination with checking score strength) before actually submitting your move. But if that's the case, why would it bug you so much to click the board now and again to reactivate the arrow?
Anyway, you've been blathering on about the arrow 'issue' for weeks and they haven't done anything about it, so my advice would be to stop sounding like a broken record and get over it. Or send them a direct email.

I love this attempt to stretch. It stays up exactly 10 seconds, every time. That's what it's set for. It used to be 5, and they changed it when I bitched about it.

This is new – it didn't use to. I bet when they changed this is when they messed up the arrow worse than it already was, so that many times you can't even type a letter into a tile with the arrow active anymore.

Tell us about it, smarty pants. This isn't speed chess, and a player shouldn't have to hurry if he doesn't feel like it. Nobody has produced one single reason why the arrow should disappear. It didn't use to – did anyone ever complain about that? No, they didn't. If anybody did, let's see it.
Moreover, it was a distinctive and graphically attractive arrow, not like the current one which was simply pulled out of a standard character set and is ugly.

There you go, stretching again in defense of your dubious viewpoint. Needless to say, it's not a matter of always needing anything, but that sometimes the arrow goes out on me and that this is always an irritation when it does.

Because I shouldn't have to click the board now and again – i.e. repeatedly – to reactivate the frigging arrow.

I wouldn't say that. First they lengthened it to 10 seconds, and then they made it so it starts over when you enter a letter. That's quite something, actually. What they should do, however, is correct the initial mistake and eliminate the questionable arrow transiency altogether.
I like your attitude: If at first you don't succeed, give up!
so my advice would be to stop sounding like a broken record and get over it. Or send them a direct email.

@terrijay you need to update the bots you use or perhaps deal with the reason you need to play very fast games to perhaps keep the OCD in check. Elastic bands on the wrists are said to be helpful for those who, like you suffer from OCD, what happened to you to cause the OCD is not your fault nor is it other peoples, so rather than take it out on people trying to mind their own business try the elastic band method first, (you twang/flick the band into your wrist with every unwanted thought you have whilst waiting for the tile recall to sort itself out) good luck with the therapy.
